Application Guidelines for the JWRI International Joint Research Collaborator Program, 2023( General Research Project )

Purpose | The program allows researchers who do not belong to JWRI to conduct collaborative research at JWRI as a JWRI International Joint Research Collaborator (JIJReC) for a fixed term (as a rule, longer than a week). |
Eligibility Requirements for Applicants |
Eligible researchers are those who belong to contracting institutions (universities and other research institutions outside Japan) that have academic exchange agreements with JWRI, and also those who are engaged in research activities related to joining and welding. (Postgraduate students can only apply together with their professor in principle. Undergraduate students are not eligible to apply.) |
Research Period | For a specified term during the period from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024. (For Class B, you can apply for multiple years.) *The JIJReCs are strongly requested conclude their visit to JWRI by the end of February 2024. If it is necessary to visit JWRI in March 2024, please inform the host professor in JWRI of your visit schedule before the end of February 2024. |
Joint Research Subject | The joint research subject should be chosen from the list provided by JWRI under the General Research Project (viewable in another window) |
Reports on Results of Joint Research |
Successful applicants are requested to submit a report on the results of the joint research to the host professor in JWRI via e-mail within two months of the end of the visit. |
Accommodation | The university guest houses are available for JIJReCs. |
Application Procedures | Please follow the procedures below for an application. Before submitting application forms, applicants should discuss research project(s), research period(s) and any other relevant matters with the host professor in JWRI. |
Deadline for submission of applications | January 23, 2023 |
Determination of acceptance | Acceptance of your application is determined through a review by the Board of JWRI. You will be notified of the results by the relevant JWRI authorities. Note that acceptance is classified into three classes: - Class S: Travel expenses will be paid by JWRI. - Class A: Travel expenses will be paid by the corresponding Division (Department) in JWRI. - Class B: Travel expenses are covered by the applicant authorities. |
Necessary procedures when you visit JWRI |
All of the JIJReCs are required to visit the administrative office of JWRI for the completion of various procedures. |
Travel Expenses | For Class S and A acceptances, the JIJReC’s expenses for transportation and accommodation can be paid by JWRI within the range of the budget of each joint research subject in accordance with the regulations of Osaka University. Please be sure to submit your travel plan and the copy of the receipt for your flights to JWRI no later than three weeks before your travel. Postgraduate students’ expenses for transportation and accommodation can NOT be paid by JWRI. |
Announcements of the Research Results |
When you release the results of research conducted as a JIJReC, you are required to specify that you have utilized the JIJReC program at "The Joint Usage/Research Center on Joining and Welding, Osaka University". |
Treatment of intellectual property rights |
In case of creativity of intellectual property through the conduct of the joint research activities at JWRI, consultation is required to define the holders of the intellectual property rights between JWRI and the affiliated institution(s). In principle, each institution’s ownership interest depends on the contribution of each researcher’s invention and other related matters. |

Important Notes on Completion of the Application Form for the JIJReC Program
・Incomplete and/or inadequate applications may be rejected before review.
・Please choose a joint research subject from the list provided by JWRI. You may also propose your own joint research subject. In this case, you MUST enter your proposal in the field below JWRI’s list. Your proposal should be discussed with the prospective host professor in JWRI before preparing and submitting an application.
・Regarding "Outline of the research plan", please enter the research objective, contents, and other matters after close consultation with the prospective host professor in JWRI.
・Regarding "Proposed Research Department (Laboratory)", please choose the Research Department (Laboratory) in which you will conduct the joint research at JWRI.
・Please specify the research period after close consultation with the prospective host professor in JWRI. As a rule, the research period should be during the period from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024. (The schedule should be set within the term of validity of applicable academic agreements). The specified period may be adjusted in accordance with JWRI’s circumstances.
・On completion of the application by following the above procedures, the application will be automatically sent to your e-mail address as a PDF file. Please check the details to see if there is incorrect information, before sending the PDF application to "setugouken-syomu@office.osaka-u.ac.jp", the administrative office of Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University.
