The Symposium on Basic Science of Ceramics has been held at various places in Japan every January for 39 years. This symposium has generated important discussions and promoted many friendships. On the 40th anniversary at the beginning of the 21st century, the executive committee decided to organize the international symposium entitled "New Wave of Ceramics for the 21st Century". This symposium will be held in conjunction with the domestic symposium as the first step to remove borders between countries. More than 400 participants will exchange the latest information on ceramic research and applications. More lively discussions will be held and new friendships made. An exhibition for ceramic products and equipment will also be held. Osaka has relatively mild weather during this time of year (5-10 centigrades). There are many historical and modern spots in Osaka and nearby Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe. I am looking forward to seeing you in Osaka.
